The Barnardsville Free Herbal Clinic is hosted at the Big Ivy Community Center, 540 Dillingham Rd., Barnardsville. We will have regular days soon, and see below for our December dates.

We will have herbal products you can pick up, such as herbs for immunity, stress, insomnia, pain, and trauma. And CoreyPine, Eliza Rose and other clinical herbalists are available for mini-consultations with customized formulas.

All are welcome.

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) has been used in both China and India for thousands of years as a tonic to help balance the effects of aging. Known as Brahmi in Ayurveda, Gotu Kola is an excellent tonic for the brain, enhancing memory and cognition. It can also be used for ADHD, focus, and as a connective tissue tonic.Gotu Kola is a relatively easy plant to identify. It is a creeping herbaceous plant, which means it grows low to the ground and spreads. It thrives in moist, tropical/subtropical environments, often found near water bodies, in marshy areas, or in damp soil.Gotu Kola has small, fan-shaped leaves that are green and often slightly rounded or kidney-shaped, with a scalloped or wavy edge. This plant produces tiny, inconspicuous flowers that are pinkish, white, or light purple in clusters of three or more.What are your thoughts on Gotu Kola? 👇

This is a 4-week internship series that starts on May 31st. We meet every Saturday from 10am-4pm. You will get to spend time in the deep woods, exploring different ecosystems. We will be visiting waterfalls, rivers, meadows, mountains and more. 📗⠀

The Barnardsville Free Clinic is back next Thursday, 4/24, 3-7 PM at the Morgan Hill Baptist Church. Eliza Rose and CoreyPine will be hosting the free herbal clinic and the Appalachia Community Clinic will be providing free acupuncture and massage. Come join us and get some healing! It’s been a rough half year.

Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis) is a nati

Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis) is a native medicinal tree that grows wild in the southern coastal plain from central Florida through the coastal plain up to Virginia and over to east Texas. Although it does have "ash" in its name, that's because of the pinnate leaves that look like ash leaves, but Prickly Ash is more closely related to citrus like oranges and grapefruit.In February while traveling to the Florida Earthskills Gathering, @fl_earthskills_gatheringI stopped and harvested some limbs of this beautiful tree from a large stand. There are sharp spines on the younger branches that become pyramidal nubbins on the older trunks, as seen in some of these photos.The first thing I needed to do was to get the thorns off, as this makes it easier to get the bark ready to tincture and also easier to press later. So, Kendall@inserviceofspirit kindly volunteered to help me de-spine several pounds of bark and twigs around the campfire in front of the first aid tent one night. Then the next day she helped me chop up the small twigs and strip the bark from the larger branches, a process that took several hours of hard work. Finally I was able to stuff it all in a gallon jar, weigh it out, and add the correct amount of alcohol to the herb to get the tincture started. There's something about making tinctures outside that's always a little exhilarating for me, and Kendall captured the moments of the alcohol touching the herb for the first time.Now I have an herb that I can use in immune blends, to stimulate circulation, and to help with dental health. In addition to stimulating circulation to the gums, it also helps relieve mouth pain to the point where some locals call it "toothache tree." With a similar mouth tingle to Echinacea and Spilanthes, it is not only numbing but also immune stimulating. Happy to have this herb back in my apothecary again!!

Meet Beryl Fulford (Pronouns She/they).Beryl is a guest lecturer at The Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine's Holistic Herbalism Programing, teaching Gender Dynamics. They spend most of their time engaged in grad school for Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is passionate about advocacy, accessibility, and questioning the status quo. Beryl is deeply moved to making authentic connections and starting hard conversations necessary for healing on an individual and group level. Those who know them describe her style as straightforward, approachable, and engaging. Beryl believes everyone should have access to safe spaces to express themselves and strives to create that in her work.
